ANSONIA — A 51-year-old woman lost her leg below her knee after being hit by a car outside the Stop & Shop entrance on Division Street Sunday.
The victim’s name was not released. Police said Monday she was in serious but stable condition in an area hospital.
According to a statement from police, Aurelia Caprio, 88, of Shelton, was pulling out of a parking spot when she lost control of her vehicle and hit two people on the sidewalk.
The 51-year-old female’s leg was trapped between the vehicle and a steel beam. A police officer and then emergency medical technicians applied tourniquets to stop the bleeding, according to a statement Sunday from Ansonia Rescue Medical Services.
The woman lives in Ansonia, police said.
The other person hit was a 60-year-old Ansonia resident. He suffered head and facial injuries, according to police, and is in stable condition in an area hospital. His name was not released.
The crash happened at about 12:45 p.m. Sunday (Aug. 25).
Police seized Caprio’s license and returned it to the Department of Motor Vehicle.
Police found Caprio to be at fault for the accident, though no criminal charges are expected, police said.
