Police saved a suicidal women who was about to jump off a bridge on Division Street Wednesday evening.
Derby police received a call from the woman’s family Wednesday saying she was in distress and wanted to commit suicide.
At about 5:30 p.m. a motorist on the bridge, which crosses the Naugatuck River, called police to say a woman had positioned herself on a ledge.
The bridge, just north of BJ’s Wholesale, is about 100 feet above the water. The river below is shallow and packed with large rocks.
“She had climbed over the fence and was ready to jump,” said Lt. Justin Stanko.
Three Derby police officers and an Ansonia police officer were able to reach through the fence and grab the woman. A medic assisted as well, police said.
The three Derby police officers who saved the woman are Sgt. Scott Boulton, Officer Tim Conlon and Officer Jordan Gochros. The Ansonia officers assisting were Steve Martins and J.P. Lessard.
“They prevented her from jumping while an officer was able to grab her by the pants and pull her over the fence,” Stanko said. “They had to physically restrain her and lift her over.”
Police said the woman also had a suicide note with her.
She was taken by ambulance to Griffin Hospital.
