Police: Saw Blade Used In Derby Assault

Police charged a 33-year-old New York man with assault after he allegedly hit another man in the head with a saw blade.

Lt. Justin Stanko said officers were sent to the Valley Diner on New Haven Avenue at noon Wednesday for a reported assault.

The diner is undergoing a renovation. Police said two subcontractors working on the job started arguing with each other.

One subcontractor, identified as Robert Espinosa Amaro, of New Rochelle, N.Y. allegedly smacked a second contractor in the head with a five-inch grinding saw blade.

(The victim) obviously suffered some significant injuries and was transported to the hospital,” Stanko said.

His injuries are not life-threatening.

Amaro then ran to the nearby Lowe’s Home Improvement, where he was taken into custody.

Amaro is charged with second-degree assault and breach of peace.

An investigation revealed Amaro may have entered the U.S. illegally.

Agents from U.S. Immigration and Custom Enforcement were notified, Stanko said. They placed an immigration detainer on Amaro, which means he was not released from jail and will likely be in ICE custody after his case works its way through the system.

Amaro was scheduled to appear in Derby court Thursday morning.
