Police: Shelton Man Assaults Woman, Fights Officers

Shelton police arrested a Sagamore Road man late Thursday after he allegedly choked a woman, evaded an accident, and fought with officers.

Not even a Taser subdued the man, who only complied after a police dog was “deployed” on him, police said.

The man, Robert O’Brien, 31, was charged with two counts each of third-degree assault, disorderly conduct, and second-degree strangulation.

He also faces single counts of reckless driving, failure to bring a motor vehicle to a stop when signaled, interfering with an officer, evading responsibility, and operating a motor vehicle without insurance.

In a press release issued Friday police said officers “responded to a reported domestic violence dispute that was physical.”

A female victim told officers that O’Brien had become upset when he got home and had strangled her twice over the course of the evening. Police did not identify the relationship between the victim and O’Brien.

O’Brien had left the home before police arrived, according to the press release, so officers began checking streets in the area and located a vehicle registered to O’Brien.

When the officer tried to stop the vehicle, O’Brien refused to pull over, according to the press release.

“O’Brien then struck another vehicle with his vehicle, but did not stop,” the press release says. “The officer followed the vehicle to O’Brien’s residence. O’Brien refused to get out of his vehicle and he began to fight with officers when they attempted to physically remove him from the vehicle.

“An officer deployed his Taser, but O’Brien began to run away and then take an aggressive stance at the officers,” the press release states. “K‑9 Officer Nugent then deployed his K‑9 Jager. O’Brien still resisted, but eventually complied and he was placed under arrest.”

O’Brien was held on a $50,000 bond and brought to Derby Court today for arraignment.

There, a judge upped the bond to $75,000 and continued the case to June 7.
