Police cited a Shelton man Tuesday after they said he argued with fire officials before spraying them with a hose.
In a prepared statement police said Shelton Fire Marshal James Tortora and an assistant chief of the fire department responded to a residence on Beardsley Road Tuesday on a report of an open burning complaint.
The incident occurred about 6 p.m.
“The homeowner, identified as 77-year-old Mark Lilly, became verbally abusive to the fire officials and refused to put out the fire when requested to do so,” the police statement said.
The Valley Indy left a voicemail for Lilly on Wednesday morning.
“Lilly eventually got a garden hose, but sprayed both fire officials instead (of putting out the fire),” the statement said.
Police issued Lilly a misdemeanor summons for open burning and second-degree breach of peace.
He was released on a promise to appear July 1 at Superior Court in Derby.
