ANSONIA — An Elm Street resident was taken into custody Monday after a more than 10-hour standoff with police.

Gabriel Resto, 34, is charged with third-degree assault, disorderly conduct and interfering with police. He was being held on a $30,000 bond.

Police said they responded to a domestic disturbance on Elm Street at about 7:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Officers were met outside the residences by a distraught woman and her baby daughter. The woman told cops Resto had a gun and was acting erratically.

Police said they could hear Resto yelling from inside the residence. Police took the woman and child to safety.

The woman told police Resto was her boyfriend and father to the baby.

Police established a perimeter around the residence and shut the road down.

“The Connecticut State Police Emergency Service Unit responded to the scene and immediately began attempts to contact Resto in order to convince him to come out of the apartment and surrender peacefully,” according to a statement from Ansonia Police Lt. Patrick Lynch.

The standoff lasted through the night and into Monday morning, causing some Ansonia school buses to be rerouted.

“After more than ten hours of attempted contact and negotiation, Resto refused to exit the home so non-lethal irritants were used to persuade him to exit,” Lynch said.

Resto left the apartment, but then tried to go back inside, at which point police “used a less lethal impact munition” in order to bring the incident to an end. Resto was not seriously hurt.

The incident was over just after 8 a.m. Monday.

Police were scheduled to search the house Monday afternoon.
