Shelton Pop Warner Football & Cheerleading announces its dates for their annual Breast Cancer Awareness event. As is the case each year, the Vikings last home game in October is a celebration and fundraiser for this important cause.
Sunday, October 21st will feature special fundraisers, a mobile digital mammography screening vehicle, and lots of pink.
The games will be played at the home of the Vikings, Gracie Field. The field is named for Grace Searles, who succumbed to this disease in 2004. Ms. Searles was a former Shelton Pop Warner cheerleader who later became President of the league.
“Grace is a part of the fabric of this program, so this cause is near and dear to our hearts,” says League President Tim Monteleone. “The board of directors recently amended the association by-laws ensuring that this event will be a permanent fixture on the S.P.W. calendar.”
“There will be lots of pink accessories that are being made available for the fans at no charge; we ask only that they make a donation of any amount for Breast Cancer Awareness,” adds Vice President, Mike Boyce. “Each year on this day, Shelton Pop Warner donates all proceeds from the gates as well money earned from the 50/50 and other raffles.”
Football players will be decked out in pink socks and more, while cheerleaders will all wear pink ribbons. The day will feature special raffles and the concession stand will offer home cooked menu items, and other surprises.
In addition, the St. Vincent’s Digital Mammography Screening unit will be at the games. The unit will be parked at the Shelton Riverwalk at 100 Canal St. from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Appointments are necessary and can be made by calling 203.576.5505. A referral from a physician is suggested for this exam. There will be free screenings for those with no insurance or financial limitations.
