Prendergast Students Top Writing Contests

CONTRIBUTED PHOTOThe Charger Club is an after school program funded by a federal 21st Century Learning Grant, that allows selected 6th grade students to participate in an hour of academic tutoring and an hour of regimented exercises and activities at the local Boys and Girls Club.

The 6th grade students in the Charger Club are presented with writing contests that encourage them to write about a topic and submit it on the state level to compete against their peers who participate in similar grant programs.

This year, Prendergast School has had some standout students. So far, there have been three writing contests and Prendergast scholars have placed in the top three in all three contests.

Ansonia student, Alex Medvegy placed third in the Spooky Story contest titled, Fact or Fiction and won a portable DVD player.

A few months later, Kelly Zarka placed third for her poem titled, The Ocean, in A Picture’s Worth a Thousand Words.

Kelly also won a portable DVD player.

Prendergast students recently placed second and third in the Public Service Announcement contest which required students to create a one-minute public service announcement on a current issue that they face. The two groups that won both created an announcement on Bullying.

Second place winners were awarded $25 iTunes gift cards and included students Sebastian Wojcik, Evan Stevens and Austin Elliott.

Third place winners won Ear bud Headphones and consisted of students Alex Medvegy, Taylor Brown, and Joanne Xayarath.

Prendergast teachers, Sherrod McNeill, Stacey Huzi, Nicole Halpin and Megan McGill work closely with students who are participating in these contests.

The children work hard when they are presented with these contests and we are very excited at their accomplishments,” said Elizabeth Nimons, Academic Coordinator of the program. The students are very proud of themselves and the teachers that work with them are equally as proud of their hard work and dedication.”

The last contest is due at the end of April and asks students to submit an essay, poem or video presentation describing someone who is a hero.
