Shelton Parks and Recreation Department will host several programs during the fall and winter months, including UConn basketball bus trips, open gym hours for adult basketball and a wrestling program from children.
UCONN BASKETBALL BUS TRIPS
The Shelton Parks and Recreation Department will be running bus trips to see the Men and Women Huskies at the XL Center in Hartford. The Women will take on West Virginia on Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2012 at 7 p.m. The bus will leave the Shelton Community Center at 4:30 p.m. The cost is $28.
The defending national champion Men will battle Notre Dame on Sunday, Jan. 29, 2012 at noon. The bus will leave the Community Center at 10 am. The cost is $33. Those interested need to register at the Shelton Community Center, 41 Church Street. Both games have upper level seating.
ADULT BASKETBALL OPEN GYM
The Shelton Parks and Recreation Department will once again be having an Adult Open Gym for Basketball during the fall and winter months. The open Basketball program will be held on Sunday mornings at the Shelton High School Gym.
It will run from Dec. 4, 2011 – April 1, 2012 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at Shelton High School Gym, 120 Meadow St.
The cost is $35, or $20 after Feb. 6. Make checks payable to the City of Shelton.
Participants must be a minimum of 18 years of age and be a Shelton resident, or a full time worker in Shelton to qualify to play.
Participants must register at the Shelton Parks and Recreation Department in the Community Center, 41 Church Street and be issued a photo ID card. Participants must show their membership ID at the gym each week. This is an adult program and players are asked not to bring children due to lack of insurance for non-participants. Players are also asked not to bring basketballs to the gym. Basketballs will be provided.
YOUTH WRESTLING PROGRAM
The Shelton Parks and Recreation Department will be sponsoring a youth coed wrestling program for children in grades 5 through 8.
The program will be on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:15 – 7:30 pm. It will begin Dec. 6, 2011 and run for 20 sessions in the Shelton High School auxiliary gymnasium. The program will be instructional in nature covering fundamentals, fitness, and sportsmanship. There will be plans for a future competitive program
Justin Krofssik, assistant Shelton High Wrestling coach, will be the coordinator of the program. The cost is $70 with discounts offered for siblings. Those interested must pre-register and sign a waiver at the Shelton Community Center, 41 Church Street.
DOG PARK UPDATE
The Shelton Dog Park Committee has set up a fund for donations for the Dog Park in the city. The 2 acre site is at city owned property on Nells Rock Road. Funding is needed for site amenities including fencing, signage, benches, and waste receptacles.
There are two options for those wishing to donate.
- Checks can be made payable to the ‘City of Shelton Dog Park Fund’ and send to the Parks and Recreation Department at 41 Church Street, Shelton, CT 06484.
- A ‘Buy a Brick’ program has been set up where individuals or groups can purchase bricks to be installed at the park. The cost is $50 for an 4” x 8” brick or $100 for an 8” x 8” brick. The ‘Buy a Brick’ forms are at the Shelton Community Center, City Hall and H3 Pet Supply at 350 Bridgeport Avenue or can be completed at the city’s web site at www.cityofshelton.org, Community Services, Recreation Center, Dog Park.
