Progress Made As Seymour Outage Numbers Finally Decrease

Electricity returned to nearly 30 percent of Seymour Wednesday afternoon.

The power was restored mostly in the area around the center of town, said Tom Eighmie, emergency management director.

By 3:06 p.m., the Connecticut Light & Power outage map showed 71 percent of Seymour was still without power. Those numbers held firm through 6:20 p.m.

The locations that were back on included the Seymour Public Library.

Our power came back on around 2‑ish,” said the reference librarian, Charlotte Rowell.

The lights were on, computers were up and the building was starting to warm up, she said. The library had been open during the blackout, without electricity.

It was cold and dark,” Rowell said.

Eighmie was hopeful the restoration work would continue.

Hopefully if they continue on and there’s no glitch in the system it will take another day or two,” Eighmie said.

Seymour had no roads closed or blocked Wednesday. Tree crews had cleared much of the fallen debris, or it had been pushed to the side of the roads.

Eighmie said the emergency shelter continues to be open and ready at Seymour Middle School, 211 Mountain Road.

There’s plenty of food, plenty of donations from the community. People have been coming in to take showers, or charge cell phones,” Eighmie said.

First Selectman Paul Roy said power was returning to the substation at Beacon Falls that knocked out much of Seymour.

They were going to see how far they can get into Seymour,” Roy said.

He didn’t know how long it would take, but he was hopeful.

Roy said the town has extended the hours for the transfer station, so residents could dispose of fallen tree limbs and spoiled food.

The transfer station, on Silvermine Road, is open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday. The transfer station will have extended hours from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

Full grocery service was also available at Super Stop & Shop on Franklin Street, a worker said. The store had not been selling perishables during the blackout, but by Wednesday at 3:23 p.m. enough generator power was available to sell them again, the worker said.

The Seymour school district canceled schools for Thursday, Nov. 3.
