An investigation into a release of propane at Seymour High School is focusing on the action of school personnel who allegedly used science equipment in a way the equipment is not supposed to be used, police and school officials said Thursday.
Firefighters, police and ambulance crews were sent to the high school Monday (Oct. 24)after people in the school reported a strong propane odor in the science wing.
Six students who were not feeling well were taken to Griffin Hospital to get checked out. They were released from the hospital the same day.
More than 700 students were evacuated from the building so firefighters could test the air.
A check of the propane equipment by Suburban Propane showed there were no mechanical problems.
School officials said the incident was caused by “human error” and science equipment not being used in a way not intended.
“The Superintendent of Schools is conducting further investigations to determine whether personnel actions are appropriate. The matter has also been referred to the Seymour Police Department Detective Division and the Seymour Fire Marshal’s Office who are also investigating the incident,” the school district said in a prepared statement.
