Rain Closes The Cafeteria At Derby’s Irving School

Heavy rain damaged the roof above the Irving School cafeteria Friday, triggering a two-hour delay in classes.

Water flooded the front of the cafeteria and small section of the kitchen, Irving School Principal Jennifer Olson said.

A maintenance crew staff cleaned the mess, allowing classes to start at 11 a.m.

Although there was minor flooding on the floor, the majority of the damage are water stains on the ceiling and roof.

A roofing company will start making repairs to the roof over the weekend, school district facilities manager Dave Nardone said.

Olson said the cafeteria will be closed the remainder of the school year. The last day of school is June 25, according to the Derby schools website.

An official from the Naugatuck Valley Health District inspected the kitchen area Friday and said it can be used to prepare food.

Students will buy food from the cafeteria and eat in the gymnasium next door.

The Derby Board of Aldermen and the Board of Apportionment and Taxation are currently preparing a multi-million bonding package that will be put to voters later this year.

A question on the referendum will ask voters to approve spending $5,806,000 to replace roofs at the Bradley School, the Irving School and Derby High School.

The city anticipates that 74 percent of the $5.8 million project will be reimbursed by the state’s education department.

A referendum date has not been scheduled. City officials are still calculating the taxpayer costs for $24 million to $28 million in repairs to the city’s sewer system, the other component in the referendum.
