Readers React: Dogs Banned From Derby Greenway

After several years of complaints about feces on the walkway, the dog ban on the Derby Greenway goes into affect Sunday (April 15), the Electronic Valley reminded residents this week.

The E. Valley included some of the language from the local ordinance:

No person shall take domestic or exotic animals onto the Greenway. Animals including but not limited to dogs, cats, birds, snakes, rodents, and horses.

Any violation of the rules and regulation of this Ordinance may be enforced by the City of Derby Police Department, by citation and fine in the amount of $75.00, or any other fine as allowed by law.”

The Valley Indy linked to the information from our Facebook page, which triggered a stream of comments from readers.

Christopher Pagliaro: Absolutely, people should have to walk their dogs on the streets. Who cares about the dangers traffic poses to owner or animal, which could be avoided by using such a great facility. Ban pets from sidewalks too!

Wendy Valeo DiCarlo: What exactly is an exotic animal that you would bring on the greenway with you?

Kim Nelson-Glance: my brother lives across from the greenway..he told me its not the dogs, its the geese causing the poo issues..and the mothers with babies throwing the diapers down to the water..he actually yelled at some woman for doing it and she flipped him off..nice..but lets blame the dogs right?

Christopher Bowen: People are going to vote for anything that makes their own lives easier. To hell with the freedom and liberty of your neighbours, I almost stepped in poo that one time!

Adrianne Mora: Dammit… now where am I going to walk my alligator??

Dave Pecoraro: Obviously the problem isn’t the dogs themselves – it’s their trash owners who can’t be bothered to pick up after them.

Katherine Turecek Gerwien: Last time I was on the greenway someone was walking a GOAT on a leash, sounds exotic to me, not your typical 4 legged pet/dog…

Christopher Bowen: I would make a joke about walking a bear, but that’s not really a joking matter in this part of the country anymore.

Katherine Turecek Gerwien: On Wed in Downtown Shelton there was a guy walking on Howe Ave with an IGUANA on his head, I’m serious. I guess he can’t go to the greenway either.

Noelle North Schmidt: I saw the iguana guy in Shelton! It was on his shoulder, not a leash. Is that ok?

Noelle North Schmidt: FYI. I love the greenway, but hate the lazy owners. I recently got a puppy & wanted to walk her there but obviously can’t now. There are other places / trails that are dig friendly in shelton Trails & also monroe trails. Please bring poop bags with you do our dogs can all enjoy without any kids or animals getting sick.

Laura Garrity: Sad since there are actually disposal bags available on the greenway and after several warnings people can’t be bothered.

Raymond Cirisoli: No one from my family are going to go either………..oh how lucky we are in the Valley that all we have to worry about is banning dogs…..HA HA…..wake up and look around
