Rell Declares Jan. 21 ‘Derby Middle School Day’

Gov. M. Jodi Rell has declared Jan. 21 to be Derby Middle School Day. The governor’s office issued the following proclamation Wednesday afternoon:

On behalf of the State of Connecticut, I, M. JODI RELL, Governor, take great pleasure in congratulating the City of Derby in recognition of its Grand Opening Celebration of Derby Middle School on January 21, 2010.

This new middle school is the first new school in Derby in 40 years and will house sixth, seventh, and eighth graders in a state-of-the-art wireless building. The innovative hillside design and turbine co-generation plant, as well as energy conservation technology, make for a highly efficient and environmentally friendly building.

With smart boards in all classrooms and a more comfortable setting in which to teach the leaders of our future, Derby Middle School has set a standard of excellence for all schools throughout the State of Connecticut.

This occasion offers us the opportunity to thank the Board of Education, town leaders, school teachers and staff, volunteers, families, and students of Derby Public Schools for their ongoing support and enthusiasm for this project. Congratulations on the grand opening of Derby Middle School and may Derby Public Schools continue to teach, grow, and encourage Derby’s young students to be the best they can be.

Therefore, I, M. JODI RELL, Governor of the State of Connecticut, in recognition of the grand opening celebration, do hereby officially proclaim January 21, 2010, as DERBY MIDDLE SCHOOL DAY in the State of Connecticut.
