DERBY — UPDATE: The Derby Police Department issued the following statement Tuesday morning regarding last night’s crimes.
Three people “were indentified pending charges,” according to Derby Police Lt. Justin Stanko, while one person remains at large.
“On MON DEC 28 at approximately 4:40pm, the Derby Police Department responded to the area of Hawkins Street near Seventh Street on reports of multiple gun shots.
Witnesses and video surveillance depicted a white Kia SUV fleeing the scene.
Earlier that morning, Derby Police identified a 2011 white Kia SUV that was reported stolen from Shelton.
At that time, the Kia was parked alongside a second vehicle. When police arrived to investigate (in the morning), both the Kia and second vehicle fled the area. A short pursuit ensued with the second vehicle, which was terminated.
While detectives were on scene processing the shooting, the same stolen white Kia SUV came back to the area.
Derby Police attempted to stop the Kia after which a pursuit ensued onto Route 8 north. The pursuit ended after the Kia crashed on the Route 8 exit 22 off-ramp. Three males immediately fled the crash on foot while one passenger remained inside asking for help as the vehicle’s engine had caught fire.
A Derby Police officer removed the suspect from the passenger seat. He was identified as a 17 year-old juvenile from Derby.
As the police were removing the juvenile from the vehicle, the officer heard a loud thud that was later determined to be one of the fleeing suspects being struck by an unrelated vehicle traveling on Wakeley Street. That (second) suspect was immediately apprehended by a responding Oxford Police Officer. He was identified as an 18-year-old male from Derby. Ambulance transported him to Waterbury Hospital where he was treated for minor injuries.
Seymour Police and Connecticut State Police K‑9 units assisted in the track of the other two suspects.
They were not located.
At approximately 10:00pm, a 15 year-old male from Derby presented in the Griffin Hospital ER. He complained of injuries related to a motor vehicle accident. His appearance and clothing matched one of the two suspects who fled the accident (suspect three).
Due to injuries and hospital treatment, charges are pending for all three of the suspects and will be done by warrant. The initial shooting investigation remains under investigation.
(Editor’s note: a fourth person from the crashed car remains at large)
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Derby Police Department at (203) 735‑7811 × 0. All calls may remain confidential.”
Original post from Monday night appears below:
Two people were in custody and police were searching for two more people after a report of shots fired at the intersection of Hawkins Street and Seventh Avenue Monday.
Police received a report of shots fired in the area of the intersection around 4:40 p.m. There were no reports of any injuries.
Responding units received a description of a vehicle leaving the area, and spotted a vehicle matching the description. The vehicle (reported stolen), with four people inside, got on Route 8 north.
Derby police pursued it.
The vehicle crashed in Seymour and rolled over, police said. One of the people from the vehicle was hit by a car. Another person was taken into custody, according to Lt. Justin Stanko of the Derby Police Department. As of 7:30 p.m., police dogs and cops were searching for the other two people. (SEE UPDATE ABOVE)

It was too early for police to state the specific connection between the vehicle and the shots fired. Police are investigating.
Seymour First Selectwoman Annmarie Drugonis was almost hit by the suspect vehicle at about 6:15 p.m. before it crashed.
“I was getting onto Route 8 north by the public works building, and I was pulling onto the highway, a white car almost ran me off the road. I had to swerve to avoid crashing into the guardrail. I see state and local police everywhere driving toward exit 22 (Bank Street). Next thing I see is that white car, crashed off the exit ramp, near Auto Zone, doors open, airbags out, and two kids running from the car. Ansonia, Derby, Seymour, Oxford and state all over the place. Residents living on Cedar Street (below Route 8) came out of their houses because the crash was so loud, they heard it and came running over.
Drugonis spoke with Seymour EMS Chief Kyle Kelly, who she said told her a person was being put onto a stretcher following the crash.
Seymour Police Chief Paul Satkowski said Monday he arrived on the scene of the crash at Exit 22 (Bank Street) around 7:30 p.m. Satkowski said a white vehicle crashed on the off-ramp across from the Auto Zone Plaza, and three suspects jumped out of the car and fled on foot to nearby Wakeley Street.
One of the suspects, while running from the scene, was hit by a car, Satkowski said. An Oxford Police Officer was able to apprehend that individual, according to Satkowski. That suspect, or “person of interest,” Satkowski said was taken to Waterbury Hospital. It was not immediately known what, if any injuries, the person apprehended by police, had suffered either as a result of the initial car crash off the exit ramp or from being hit by the car.
Satkowski said both Seymour Police Department’s canine, as well as the state police canine unit, were working to track down the other two suspects.
Satkowski said he was in the process of getting briefed by other officials who were on the scene and hoped to have more information to share at a later time.
The Town of Seymour sent the following Code Red message at 8:10 p.m. (update: at 10:22 p.m. police sent a message saying the two suspects weren’t caught; but they’re no longer thought to be in Seymour):
“This is the Office of the First Selectwoman with an emergency notification utilizing the Code Red System. Earlier this evening, suspects involved in a shooting in Derby were involved in a motor vehicle accident in downtown Seymour. The suspects fled on foot and are being tracked through Seymour by police. The suspects are believed to be armed and dangerous. If residents should see anything suspicious, we ask that you immediately call 911 and do not confront them. Please be aware and exercise caution.”
