Report: Party Boat Antics Led To Ansonia Officer’s Suspension

Antics aboard a party boat with several members of the Ansonia Police Department in 2002 led to Lt. Wayne Williams’ recent suspension, according to a heavily-redacted internal affairs report.

The New Haven Register reported Sunday (July 19) that the incident took place on a boat owned by a contractor who previously did business with the city.

According to the Register’s reporting:

The charges stem from a state police investigation into Williams, which began in July 2008 at the request of the Board of Police Commissioners. According to the report, four of the five commissioners, as well as Mayor James Della Volpe and Police Chief Kevin Hale, received an anonymous complaint that, while it didn’t specifically name Williams, could have only been referring to him, Hale told state police.

The complaint alleged that this “‘Ansonia supervisor (word redacted) that was having physical relations with (name redacted), on a city contractors (sic) boat, allowed pictures to be taken and failed to keep control of the pictures.”

The name of the contractor who owned the boat has been redacted in the report, but Hale described him in testimony as owning a towing company formerly on the Ansonia PD wrecker list,” which was removed from the list after father and son were arrested following a dispute with another garage.”
