Rev. Levey To Receive ‘Unsung Hero’ Award

The Rev. Samuel Levey will be honored with an unsung hero” award from the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Brotherhood Award Committee.

The announcement came as a surprise Wednesday to Levey, who was in the audience at Macedonia Baptist Church on Pershing Drive where the committee was honoring five people who rushed into a burning building trying to save two elderly residents.

About halfway through the ceremony, Surether Belton announced that Levey, the pastor at Williams Memorial Church of God in Christ, would be honored at an event in the spring.

Claude Perry, Sr. then spoke about Levey, a longtime friend.

Instead of making a long speech about Levey, Claude Perry, Sr. simply urged those in the church Wednesday to get to know Levey.

Levey, surprised, took the podium.

I love the Lord. I love people. I don’t look down on anybody,” he said.

It’s a great shock,” he said of the announcement.

Then Belton told him the award will actually be given to him in the spring.

It’s still a shock. I’ll see you in the spring,” he said, laughing.

The Brotherhood Committee, chaired by Ralphine Siggars Ford, is celebrating 25 years in existence.

To mark the occasion, they’re planning the unsung hero” award in the spring, an Ansonia event for children in the summer and an event for senior citizens next fall.
