A robotics team made up of Shelton middle school students has qualified for the next round in an international competition with a grand prize valued at up to $250,000.
The Shelton Robotic Revolution team received 36,528 Internet votes, the most of the 261 competing for the First Lego League Global Innovation Award. They will learn next month if they reach the final stage of the competition.
The team, made up of sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students from Shelton Intermediate and Perry Hill schools, created “Smart Sticker” an innovative solution to protect consumers from contaminated eggs.
The “Smart Sticker” idea is an indicator sticker on the outside of refrigerated food packaging (eggs) that indicates with a green sticker if the food product has been kept at the correct temperature during its transportation and storage.
Team adviser John Niski, who appeared on WICC radio with Mike Bellamy earlier this month to discuss the competition (Click the play button above to listen to the segment), sent the following details Friday via e‑mail:“The FLL Global Innovation “Smart Sticker” voting is completed and the Shelton Robotic Revolution Team has finished this phase of the competition in first place! They now move onto the semi-finals along with 19 other teams, determined by the rest of the top ten and ten others selected by the judges, for final judging.
All 20 semi-final submissions will now be judged based on content criteria and three finalists will be selected. The finalists and eventual winner will be notified by April 1. The overall winner from the three finalists will then be awarded the opportunity to work with professionals from Edison Nation, the U.S. Patent Office, and Dean Kamen to bring their idea through the rest of the product development process and eventually to market. A value of up to $250,000.
The Robotic Revolution Team is grateful to all who voted and is excited to enter the next phase of the competition. The outpouring of support from the Valley Community and beyond has been incredible! The team will continue their work on the Smart Sticker through the prototype phase and development of marketing strategies. It has been an incredible learning experience for all involved.
Thanks to everyone for their support of FIRST Robotics.”
