In a letter released Wednesday state Rep. Kara Rochelle (D‑Ansonia) said insurance companies should issue refunds to bars or restaurants that have closed or reduced capacity because of the COVID-19 virus.
“The Lower Naugatuck Valley is full or small restaurants and bars that help support and drive the local economy,” Rochelle said. “I am concerned about the ability of these businesses to stay afloat and make it through this pandemic.”
Rochelle said that she has been talking to local restaurant and bar owners who said they are paying full price for their insurance premiums. Rochelle noted the premiums are based, in part, on last year’s liquor sales.
Rochelle’s letter was sent to Andrew N. Mais, the commissioner of the Connecticut Insurance Department.
“If these companies are not open or have significantly reduced their operational capacity, it is obvious they are not keeping pace with last year’s sales, and I encourage you to urge insurance companies to issue a refund to those bars and restaurants that have closed of reduced their capacity.”
Rochelle said the same courtesy should be extended to other businesses upended by the virus, including hair and nail salons, barbershops and dance studios.
The idea is not out of left field. Last month Mais urged automobile insurance companies to lower premiums for customers since so many motorists were staying home at the request of the government.
Rochelle noted that despite the economic toll the COVID-19 shutdown is having on bars and restaurants, many establishments are still donating food to at-risk families, first responders, and healthcare workers.
“Small businesses make our communities unique and strengthen the economy,” Rochelle said. “It would be a great disservice if these businesses remain closed indefinitely.”
Rochelle represents the 104th Assembly District, which includes Ansonia and Derby.
