Rodney Lee Brown, the man arrested in connection to the September death of his 3‑month-old daughter, has been released from jail after family members posted a $20,000 bond.
Brown’s bond had initially been set at $500,000 immediately after his arrest. A judge lowered it earlier this month.
Police never said what specific role, if any, Brown had in the baby’s death, which authorities deemed “suspicious.” He was charged, however, with risk of injury to a minor.
His case is still winding its way through the court system.
On Wednesday, Brown briefly appeared again before Judge Burton Kaplan, but the case was quickly continued until March 1 at the request of public defender Paul Eschuk.
“I need a sit-down with Mr. Brown,” to discuss the case, Eschuk told Kaplan.
Brown had been locked up since Sept. 11, when he was charged after his daughter was found unresponsive at his Jewett Street apartment.
The baby, Alayziah, was later pronounced dead at Griffin Hospital.
The baby’s mother, Kristi FitzGerald, has said Brown rolled over on Alayziah that night. The death certificate indicates that the child was sharing a bed with an adult.
However, the medical examiner also ruled the cause of death “sudden unexplained infant death,” and said the manner was “undetermined.”
The medical examiner’s report helped Eschuk get the bond lowered from $75,000 last month.
Police are still waiting for more toxicology reports to come back from the state lab, which has experienced a lot of delays.
After his brief appearance, Brown declined to comment.
FitzGerald was unable to be immediately reached Wednesday.
Brown is also facing charges for two other, unrelated incidents.
