The Derby-Shelton Rotary Club raised more than $11,000 to provide scholarships to Derby High School and Shelton High School seniors at its annual auction on Saturday, May 4 at the Grassy Hill Lodge in Derby.
Each year, the Derby-Shelton Rotary Club awards nine scholarships with a total value of $14,250.
Three scholarships are awarded exclusively to Derby High School seniors, three scholarships are awarded exclusively to Shelton High School seniors, and three scholarships are awarded to seniors from either high school.
More than 125 people attended the auction, which offered a variety of merchandise and services donated by Derby and Shelton business owners and individuals.
Auction Chair Bill Miller stated that the auction, in its 34th year, “embodies the Rotary motto of service above self. The hard work of the club’s membership to hold this great event is completely worthwhile when we meet the outstanding young people of the Valley who are awarded the scholarship to pursue their college dreams.”
Highlighting the auction was a visit by U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, who donated a breakfast and personal tour of the U.S. Capitol building.
The winning bid was made by club member and Rotary District Governor Ernie Luise.
Bill Miller marveled that Blumenthal took time out of his extremely busy schedule to stop by and thank the club for their service and dedication to the community.
