Sacred Heart 92, Seymour 66

Sacred Heart (18 – 3), the top-seeded team in the NVL tournament, came alive in the fourth quarter, beating the Seymour Wildcats 92 – 66 Saturday.

Seymour (12 – 9), ranked eighth, kept it close for most of the game — managing a 36 – 35 lead at the half.

We played hard and with a lot of intensity,” Wildcats coach Joe Carrafiello said. I’m happy with the way we played. We played our worst game of the year at Woodland [a 60 – 49 upset loss] on Wednesday and we were determined to play much better tonight.”

Photo: Eliot SchicklerThe first quarter belonged to Seymour junior Louis Krohelski (16 points, four assists, two steals), who scored 11 of his points in the opening quarter.

When we played them before, we remembered we could spread their defense and when my man came out to guard me, I felt Kyle and I could break our guys down,” Krohelski said.

He was referring to Wildcats senior co-captain Kyle Moran (24 points, six rebounds, three assists), who owned the second quarter. Moran had 12 points in the second, including three 3‑pointers.

I guess I was feeling it tonight and I had good touches on the ball,” Moran said.

Seymour stayed tough in the third quarter but Sacred Heart picked it up and pulled away.

The Wildcats were assessed 34 fouls — compared to Sacred Heart’s 19 — including one on their bench when Seymour fans voiced their displeasure.

Junior Louis Krohalski (16 points, four assists, two steals) fouled out in the third quarter after being charged with his fourth foul and then being assessed his fifth on a technical foul.

In the third quarter, Sacred Heart went on a run and I fouled,” Krohalski said when asked why his production didn’t stay the same after the first quarter.

Sacred Heart continued to pull away in the fourth quarter and hit a few dunks in an imitation of Showtime,’ one in which Turner went coast-to-coast for a jam off a steal and tried to alley-oop it, only to miss the dunk. The Hearts also took advantage of Wildcats senior 6 – 6 center Rich Adeniyi (eight points, seven rebounds) fouling out.

Once Adniyi was on the bench, Sacred Heart had more second chance opportunities.

We didn’t make the plays on defense and committing 34 fouls didn’t help us,” Carrafiello said.

Seymour plays in the Class M tournament on March 9. Seeding come out this week at casciac.org.
