Charles Sampson, a veteran firefighter and a sergeant with the Waterbury Police Department, has been named director of the Derby Office of Emergency Management.
Sampson replaces Vin Vizzo, who passed away Jan. 7.
Mayor Anthony Staffieri announced the appointment at Thursday’s Aldermen meeting.
Sampson has lived in Derby for 22 years — and he’s been a member of the Hotckhiss Hose Engine Co. for 21 years. He’s also a past chief of the Derby Fire Department.
He’s also a coach with Pop Warner football and Derby Little League.
He and his wife, Linda, have two children.
“It’s my pleasure to nominate Charlie. He has given a lot to the city and he’s a true professional,” Staffieri said. “I’m sure he’ll do a great job.”
The Derby Office of Emergency Management (OEM) plans and prepares for emergencies, educates the public on preparedness, in addition to disseminating emergency information.
In Derby, OEM members are also heavily involved in community service, whether it be Derby Day or the annual Thanksgiving road race.
The OEM position is not a paid position.
