Graduating high school seniors or individuals pursuing a degree in environmental science may apply for scholarships from The Watershed Fund, a non-profit organization established by the South Central Connecticut Regional Water Authority.
Students must reside in the Regional Water Authority district which includes Ansonia, Beacon Falls, Bethany, Branford, Cheshire, Derby, East Haven, Guilford, Hamden, Killingworth, Madison, Milford, New Haven, North Branford, North Haven, Orange, Prospect, Seymour, West Haven and Woodbridge.
The criteria for scholarships are merit, financial need and the pursuit of a career in environmental studies.
A unique feature to the scholarships is that they are renewable for up to four years. However, renewals are not automatic; all renewals are at the discretion of The Watershed Fund.
The Watershed Fund scholarship program also includes the opportunity for college students who are juniors, seniors or in graduate school to apply for a $5,000 award from The David Silverstone Leadership Scholarship fund. This fund honors a retired president of the Authority.
Scholarship applications and additional information are available online at www.thewatershedfund.org. The deadline for applications for the 2013 – 2014 academic year is April 5, 2012.
In addition to awarding scholarships, the non-profit Watershed Fund is dedicated to acquiring threatened watershed lands and supporting environmental education programs. It is the first fund of its kind established by a New England water utility.
