SEYMOUR — The Strand Theater on Main Street is screening two comedy classics Saturday (May 21): “Spaceballs” and “Galaxy Quest.”

“Spaceballs,” released in 1987, is a “Star Wars” parody directed by the legendary Mel Brooks, and stars Bill Pullman, John Candy, and Daphne Zuniga. It is rated PG and is the most beloved of Brooks’ later films, especially among Gen X’ers. Brooks’ earlier directorial efforts include “Young Frankenstein” and “Blazing Saddles.”
“Galaxy Quest,” released in 1999, parodies cerebral sci-fi staples such as “Star Trek.” It stars Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver and Alan Rickman. The film, despite good reviews, was anything but a blockbuster upon its initial theatrical release, but has generated a large following over the years for its pointed yet loving critique of “fanboy” culture.
In addition to the movies, there will be raffle prizes featuring a bunch of “Spaceballs” and “Galaxy Quest” swag.
