Scouts Like Sgt. Slaughter, Miss America, Cannons

Note: The author is a Boy Scout from Derby serving as a Valley Indy hometown correspondent for the 2010 National Boy Scout Jamboree.

On Wednesday, the jamboree officially opened with a large arena show at 9 a.m.

As Jimmy and I reported, the show was spectacular.

We saw Secretary of Defense Gates, the Chief Scout Executive, the National OA Chief, the Governor of Virginia, and even Miss America.

All the speakers had a common theme. They welcomed the scouts to Virginia and wished the scouts a happy 100th birthday.

I interviewed several scouts and leaders from Troop 126 subcamp 1 about what they liked best about the show.

Our Scoutmaster Mr. Murray said that he enjoyed Secretary Gates’ story about his life and his trail to Eagle.

I also talked to my brother Tyler Stankye, ASPL of Troop 126. He said the best part of the show for him was Miss America.

Scout Kenny Giangregorio said that his favorite part of the show was the Army Golden Nights parachuting into the arena.

Several of the other scouts I interviewed said they liked the WWE Wrestling Superstars that came with the famous Sgt. Slaughter.

The army soldiers firing off the Howitzer canons at the end of the show was bad.

Saturday we have a large show in the arena at 7 p.m. We will have fireworks and much, much more. We are supposed to have a special appearance by Taylor Swift. More to come in another report.
