Second Arrest Made In Connection To Double Fatal 2021 Hit And Run

Riqui Irigoyen-Flores, 31, of West Haven.

SEYMOUR — Police on Thursday announced a second arrest in connection to a December 2021 hit and run on Route 67 that took the lives of two senior citizens.

Riqui Irigoyen-Flores, 31, of West Haven, was charged on Wednesday (Nov. 16) with third-degree hindering prosecution, tampering with physical evidence, and interfering with police.

Police said Irigoyen-Flores is the older brother of Jair Irigoyen-Flores, who was charged last December with two counts of misconduct with a motor vehicle, and evading responsibility resulting in death.

Police said Jair Irigoyen-Flores struck and killed James and Barbara Tamborra, both 81 of Shelton, as they tried to cross Route 67 the evening of Dec. 10. The Shelton couple was attending services at the Ward-Miller Funeral Home.

A police officer was helping people cross from a parking lot to the funeral home. He was also almost hit by Jair Irigoyen-Flores, police said.

Jair Irigoyen-Flores is due back in court Dec. 6.

In a statement posted to Facebook, Seymour police said Riqui Irigoyen-Flores attempted to help his little brother by covering up the crime.

Riqui Irigoyen-Flores assisted his brother in removing and hiding the vehicle involved in the collision on the night of the crash and hid the vehicle on his property for two nights after the crash,” Seymour police said. Riqui Irigoyen-Flores also facilitated access to a similar vehicle for his brother to help him avoid detection and suspicion with co-workers and friends.“

Police wrote an arrest warrant to detain Riqui Irigoyen-Flores, who was scheduled to be arraigned in Superior Court in Derby this morning (Thursday, Nov. 17).
