Serious Crash In Derby Sends Two People To The Hospital

Two people were rushed to area hospitals after a serious crash on Route 34 near Cullens Hill Road Friday afternoon.

Details weren’t available from Derby police.

The wreck was reported around 3 p.m. and required two ambulances and the response of advance life support emergency medical technicians.

Derby Storm Rescue crews had to use Hurst tools — also known as the jaws of life — to free the drivers from their respective vehicles.

One person was taken to Yale-New Haven and the second was taken to Bridgeport Hospital.

The extent of their injuries wasn’t released.

Derby police are apparently investigating.

The crash closed Route 34 for about an hour — and prompted a slew of comments from Valley Indy Facebook readers who pointed out that speeding is a serious problem on Route 34 and that that particular stretch of the road has seen several crashes in the last three years.

The CIty of Derby had at least one other emergency call happen at the same time as the crash. Ambulance crews from Ansonia and Shelton were brought in to cover.
