Seymour Bake Shop To Return!

SEYMOURSomething sweet is returning to downtown Seymour later this year.

Wildflour Confections will be reopening on 16 Bank Street after a three-year absence. The bakery’s owner, Alyssa DeMatteo, announced the return in a Facebook post April 13.

DeMatteo’s signature cupcakes – including cannoli, 50 Shades of Chocolate, chai latte, and strawberry shortcake – will be returning when the shop opens in late spring or early summer.

Dear Downtown Seymour, Are you ready, because WE ARE!” the post, which includes an image of the key to the shop, reads. Wildflour is coming (back) soon!”

DeMatteo’s custom cakes, original sprinkle mixes, and other baked goods will also be coming back, and she said new flavors and other treats are on the horizon.

Wildflour, which opened in 2015 on the corner of Bank and Columbus streets, was closed in 2021 after DeMatteo announced she was being deployed overseas with the National Guard. DeMatteo also said the economic impact of the Covid pandemic played a part in her decision to close the shop.

After returning from deployment in the Horn of Africa, DeMatteo continued to bake while stationed in Fort Novosel, Alabama. She ran an online ordering business while she waited for the opportunity to reopen her storefront.

Wildflour began as an online bakery in 2013 before DeMatteo opened the storefront in 2015 with support from the Women’s Business Development Council, a statewide nonprofit that provides training, education and borrowing power necessary to empower women to successfully launch and grow their own businesses. She was honored in a luncheon by the nonprofit for her entrepreneurial spirit in 2017.

Upon DeMatteo’s return to Seymour last month, she immediately began planning the shop’s return.

I couldn’t stand not being back as a part of the downtown community for another minute,” DeMatteo told The Valley Indy in an email. I missed my customers.”

Evidently, her customers missed her, too. Her Facebook announcement drew over 800 reactions and 150 comments from past and future patrons.

We missed our cupcake queen!!” one commenter wrote.

DeMatteo said she’s currently in the process of redecorating the interior space. In her email to The Valley Indy, she thanked her customers for their excitement and support even in the bakery’s absence.

I have been so incredibly supported in my military career from my Wildflour family and I just can’t thank everyone enough,” DeMatteo said. Being away as long as I was made me start to think we were forgotten about, and life just went on. When I posted the picture of the key I was once again overwhelmed with so many comments and messages filled with genuine excitement and kind words that made me feel crazy for having that ever cross my mind. My customers are truly the best.”
