Seymour Beats Wolcott

Despite losing their pitching ace after she was nailed by a line drive in the first inning, the Seymour softball team managed a win Monday 5 – 3 at home over Wolcott.

The Wildcats raised their record to 14 – 4. Wolcott is 15 – 3.

After junior righty Stephanie Burt took a line drive to her pitching hand, Seymour was able to rely on pitchers Kelly Ferris and Carissa Wasikowski to get the job done.

“Our other kids stepped it up,” Seymour coach Ken Pereiras said. “Waz [Wasikowski] had a great game and shut the door on them. Ferris pitched well and the three runs she allowed were unearned.”

Wildcat senior captain Amanda Willette got things started in the bottom of the first when she led off the inning with a bunt single past the shortstop.

Willette stole second and took third when junior Kim Ferris (Kelly’s sister) reached on an error.

Seymour then executed a double steal with Ferris stealing second and Willette stealing home on the throw to give the Wildcats a 1 – 0 lead.

Kelly Ferris pitched four innings and gave up three unearned runs on three hits with a walk and four strikeouts to earn the win.

Wolcott scored three unearned runs in the top of the fifth with Kim Ferris making an error at shortstop. Wolcott senior quad-captain Alicia Markie delivered a two-out, two-run double to left field.

However, the Wildcats answered in the bottom of the fifth.

Maggie Crocamo reached on an error and sophomore Brianna Donnarummo walked to start the inning. Then, with two outs, Kim Ferris laced a single up the middle to plate senior courtesy runner Kellee Burns.

Freshman Grace Nesbit drew a walk to load the bases.

Wasikowski followed by walloping a three-run double to left field.

“I just focused and I thought about what I had to do to keep my eye on the ball,” Wasikowski said.

Wasikowski pitched the final two innings and gave up two hits with a strikeout to earn the save.
