The Seymour Pride Committee and the employees of the Town of Seymour sponsored a Food & Blanket Drive on Sunday, March 4, 2012.
The event took place at Seymour Stop & Shop from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
The Seymour Department of Public Works graciously donated time to provide two pickup trucks for the event. Both trucks were filled with boxes of donated non-perishable foods, enough to make one run during the drive to make more room.
Over thirty new blankets were collected in addition to $1,917 in monetary donations. The food was brought to the Seymour-Oxford Food Bank at Trinity Church.
The blankets were split between the Salvation Army and the Birmingham Group.
The monetary donations will be split between other local charities including Spooner House, TEAM Inc., the Birmingham Group, and the Salvation Army.
Seymour Pride Committee members, town employees, the high school H.O.P.E Club, Seymour Lions, and emergency service workers were some who volunteered to staff the event.
The Seymour Ambulance Association also had strong presence at the event.
First Selectman W. Kurt Miller said he was blown away by the generosity of shoppers.
“Thanks to everyone that helped out and to all who donated,” he said. “It will certainly go a long way to help these great organizations.”
“Some residents went shopping for a cartload of groceries just for the drive,” Miller said. “We are honored to have such generous people in town willing to help their neighbors!”
Seymour Pride Chair Kim Osgood & Kurt extend a big thank you to Seymour Stop & Shop for letting the town host the event there and being supportive of the team during the day.
