And so it’s begun for the Seymour Tigers Pop Warner football teams. The Tigers were in Fairfield on August 23 to compete against the Fairfield Giants in the annual Sullivan Bowl.
Though the games don’t count against Seymour’s regular season record, the Sullivan Bowl officially marks the kickoff for all of Pop Warner football for the entire country.
And that could be a blessing for Seymour, which competes against Fairfield in the Southern Connecticut Pop Warner Football Conference.
Fairfield teams won all four games against Seymour: 12 – 0 in the Jr. Pee Wee contest, 6 – 0 in the Pee Wee game, 8 – 0 in the Jr. Midget game, and 20 – 19 in the Midget contest.
The Jr. Midget and Midget games included fantastic finishes. In the Jr. Midget game, the Fairfield defense had a big goal-line stand to keep Seymour off the board as time expired.
And in the Midget game, Fairfield’s Warren Davis blocked an attempted two-point conversion kick that would have given Seymour the win.
In the Midget game for Seymour, Sahid Bruno had a 15-yard touchdown run, Brian Zaccanini scored on a 35-yard touchdown run, and quarterback Kyle Chudoba hit Robert Burns for a 38-yard touchdown.
Due to thunderstorms on Friday and a wet field on Saturday, the games were pushed back. The original intent was to play the Midget game on Friday evening at Fairfield Ludlowe High School, and the remaining games Saturday at Sullivan Field.
Between cheerleading, flag football and six tackle teams, Seymour Pop Warner president Mike Gargano said there about 300 boys and girls in the program.
