A Seymour mother is upset with the way the school district handled her son’s concussion after a recent injury during gym class.
Dawnmarie Hunter said she was notified that her son was injured during gym class, but not told that he had a head injury.
She brought the concerns to the Board of Education earlier this month.
She said her 9‑year-old son Travis was riding a scooter during gym class at Anna LoPresti School, when he crashed face first into the bleachers.
Travis sustained a concussion, along with a cut and a bruise. He was treated at Griffin Hospital.
The nurse called her and said he “had a cut and bruise and should be looked at, but she never told me there was a head injury,” Hunter said.
“I wasn’t satisfied with the lack of response and the fact the Seymour Board of Education does not have a policy for dealing with head injuries,” Hunter said.
However, the Board of Education does have a policy on head injuries, and that policy was followed, board members said.
Superintendent MaryAnne Mascolo said the school nurse handled the situation appropriately, based on the symptoms presented by the student at the time.
But, in light of the complaint, the board agreed to review the policy and see if it needs to be updated.
Hunter said she was satisfied with that response — and litigation is not planned.
