Five people were sent to area hospitals — two with serious injuries — after a three-vehicle crash near downtown Seymour Friday (March 14) afternoon.
The accident was reported about 2:30 p.m., at the intersection of West, River, and Broad streets underneath Route 8.
Seymour Police Deputy Chief Paul Satkowski said at the scene that an 18-month-old boy was among those taken to the hospital, though the child did not suffer serious injuries.
The boy was properly restrained in a car seat, Satkowski said.
He said a total of three males and two females were taken to hospitals as a result of the crash.
The deputy chief said the police department’s accident reconstruction team would be investigating the acccident, which involved two pickup trucks and a sport utility vehicle.
Satkowski said at the scene it appeared that the driver of one of the pickup trucks was heading south on River Street and collided with a truck heading north, spinning it into the middle of the road.
The sport utility vehicle, which had been headed north on River Street, then collided with the truck, which ended up sandwiched between the sport utility vehicle and the other pickup truck.
The deputy chief said the road would be closed for hours for police to investigate.
Ambulances from Seymour, Oxford, and Ansonia all responded to the accident.
Seymour Fire Department Assistant Chief Steve Childs said at the scene about 20 firefighters from the Citizens Engine and Great Hill Hose volunteer fire companies responded and were able to extricate the driver of the pickup truck quickly and assist the occupants in the other vehicles.
“We don’t get a lot of volunteers during the day (usually) but we had a good turnout,” Childs said.
