The mystery of what became of two dogs whose owners said they were missing following a fire on Main Street on April 15 has been solved.
Sophia and Swag died in the blaze, a family member said Monday.
There was confusion in the days after the fire as to whether the dogs had run away. The owners posted missing signs in Seymour.
The remains of the animals were found inside the apartment house a week to 10 days after the fire.
“They found the dogs in the house, they were in a closet. (We) thought they had escaped, without anybody knowing,” Betty Armbruster of Shelton said of her daughter and grand-daughter, Kathy Marino and Ashley Marino, who lived in the third floor apartment and owned the two dogs.
They brought the remains to a veterinarian and had them cremated, Armbruster said.
“I feel so bad, that’s heartbreaking,” said Animal Control Officer Deb Ice, who said the family never contacted her to report the dogs were missing.
However, the family did hang a missing dog notice on the door of the building. It was still there Monday.
