As spring begins, the Seymour Fire Marshal’s Office would like to remind you of some fire safety tips that can keep you and your family safe.
Inside of the house it is important to make sure you have working smoke alarms.
Change your smoke alarm’s batteries if you haven’t already and remember to test them monthly. As the weather is nicer it is a good time of year to practice (EDITH) Exit Drills in The Home. Make sure all family members including children and the elderly are participating and know where your designated meeting place is.
Outside there are many things we can do to keep our property safe.
Clean grills and make sure all gas hoses are secure and leak free.
Make sure propane tanks are free of damage and that the valves are properly working.
Ensure that grills are away from the house and not on your decks and porches. Clean up any yard debris that may have come down during the winter.
Remember that it is illegal to burn leaves and if you wish to burn your brush in Seymour, you must contact the Fire Marshal’s Office for a burning permit.
One often overlooked tip is to make sure your address numbers are readily visible from the road.
Recreational campfires are acceptable in Seymour, but only when the CT Forest Fire Danger is moderate or lower.
Adult supervision is required and only sticks and logs can be burned. A garden hose or other reasonable means to extinguish the fire should be readily available.
Never ever use gasoline or other types of ignitable liquids to start a fire.
Inside the garage, you should make sure chemicals and paints are properly stored.
Make sure fuel containers are free of leaks and ensure that any fuel fired power equipment is properly maintained.
