Bullets In Hallway Prompt Seymour HS Lockdown

Police are investigating how two bullets ended up on a hallway floor at Seymour High School Thursday morning.

The bullets — one live, the other a shell casing — were noticed by two students at about 10 a.m., according to Director of Security Richard Kearns.

The students brought the bullets to school officials, who called police. While police searched, the school was put into lockdown. The lockdown was lifted at about noon.

Police searched lockers and students’ bags to determine if a gun had been brought to school, Kearns said.

No gun was found. Nothing else suspicious was found, Kearns said.

Lt. Paul Satkowski, spokesman for the Seymour Police Department, said police are trying to figure out who the bullets belong to and how they got into the school.

As of about 3 p.m. Thursday, Satkowski said police have no reason to believe the bullets were meant to convey a threat or some kind. The appearance of the bullets could have been accidental.

We don’t know if there was any intent or purpose — or if they fell out of someone’s pocket who had been at target practice with their parents,” Satkowski said.

The bullets were for 9 mm guns, police said.

Satkowski commended the students who found the bullets for telling school officials.

It’s better to err on the side of caution. The students did a good job,” he said.

Seymour police had additional officers at the building all day as a precaution, Satkowski said.

Police are asking anyone with information to call the police department at 203 – 881-7600.

It is unfortunate that this is the world we live in but we always err on the side of caution as the safety of our students and staff is our priority,” Superintendent MaryAnne Mascolo said in an e‑mail Thursday.
