Seymour High School Principal Resigns To Take Job At Pomperaug

LungariniSeymour High School Principal Glenn Lungarini has resigned his position in order to become principal at Pomperaug High School in Southbury.

Lungarini submitted his letter of resignation to Seymour Schools Superintendent Christine Syriac Monday, July 7.

I am extremely grateful for the guidance and collaboration with administrators like Christine Syriac, Nancy Snopkowski, Rick Belden, Paul Lucke, Jim Freund and all other administrators in the Seymour school district,” Lungarini said in his letter. Through the support of central office I have continually grown as an administrator and leader.”

Lungarini became Seymour High School principal in July 2012. Prior to Seymour, he worked for five years within Oxford Public Schools, where he was the high school’s assistant principal and assistant athletic director.

Syriac said she was sorry to see him go.

The Board of Education and I are very disappointed/saddened that Glenn is leaving the district after two years at Seymour High School,” she said in an e‑mail Tuesday to the Valley Indy.

Syriac credited Lungarini with helping to improve the high school’s climate and overall student performance.

I am confident that Seymour High School will continue to make positive progress in the years ahead, as we have a highly dedicated staff,” Syriac said. So while I am surprised by this sudden departure, I respect Glenn’s career aspirations and wish him success as he transitions to Region 15.”

Yashu Putorti, chairman of the Seymour Board of Education, also said he was sorry to see Lungarini leave the district after such a short tenure.

I am very disappointed in the departure of Mr. Lungarini,” Putorti said in an e‑mail. We expected him to stay with us for many years, but nothing in life is guaranteed.”

The school board chairman said Lungarini was doing a good job at Seymour High School. He was hired to rejuvenate the school, and he was getting the job done.

I like Glenn a lot and I thought he was performing extremely well in our district. He was accomplishing everything we asked him to do when we hired him,” Putorti said.

He improved the school climate for the staff and the students. He brought back the drama program. He developed a great relationship with the parents and the community,” Putorti said. He was instrumental in diverting some students from private high schools back to Seymour High School. And he brought new classes to the high school.”

Lungarini wasn’t just popular with school officials. A post in the Facebook group Seymour Citizens For Education“ on Lungarini’s resignation Tuesday attracted more than 20 comments praising him and expressing disappointment at his departure.

Now the search is on for a replacement.

I think our high school is in a good position now. We have it moving on the right track and set up to be successful and I think any new principal will be able to continue that momentum,” Putorti said. We have a model for success and we cannot let that slip away from us.”

Lungarini, a former star baseball player in the state, had equally kind words for Seymour.

It has been an honor and a privilege to serve the Seymour School District. I sincerely thank the parents of the Seymour community for allowing me to share in the lives of their children; and the students for allowing me to share in the magic that is Seymour High School,” he said in his resignation letter.

I take comfort in knowing that I have formed many meaningful relationships in my tenure at SHS; and that I believe I leave SHS a better place because of my contributions to the school.”

The superintendent said she will keep the public informed about where Seymour High School goes next.

I will keep people informed in the coming weeks as to what the next steps will be,” Syriac said.
