After being postponed by the recent blizzard, the first Seymour Historical Society program of the year, on “19th-Century Fashion,” has been rescheduled for Sunday, March 3 at 2 p.m.
Adrienne St. Pierre, of Bridgeport’s Barnum Museum, will display many beautiful garments from museum collections.
Though we now look back on the era of hoop skirts and bustle dresses as “old-fashioned,” these styles were modern innovations in their day.
Major inventions in industry, transportation, and communications had a significant impact on the way people dressed in the 1800s.
Ms. St. Pierre will discuss how the styles reflected the social, political and cultural contexts of the times.
The second program of the year will be held on Sunday, March 24, when Carolyn Ivanoff, housemaster at Shelton Intermediate School, speaks about “Civil War Medicine.” That program will also be held a 2 p.m.
The Seymour Historical Society is located at 59 West Street, near the Trinity Episcopal Church.
The program is free to Historical Society members and $3 per person ($5 per couple) for non-members.
Doors open at 1 p.m. for those wishing to see the museum’s collection.
