The Seymour Historical Society is sponsoring a program on Connecticut’s most mysterious wanderer, the Leather Man, on Sunday, Nov. 15 at 2 p.m. The event will be held at a special location, Trinity Episcopal Church, at 91 Church Street in Seymour.
Author and historian Dan DeLuca, who spent two decades researching a highly acclaimed book on the life and times of the Leather Man, will be the featured speaker. The Leather Man became legendary in the 1880s for walking a 365-mile loop every 34 days, a route that that passed through at least 41 towns in southwestern Connecticut and southeastern New York. He did so while wearing a 60-pound outfit of sturdy leather, sleeping in caves and surviving on handouts from townspeople. Adding to the mystery, he didn’t talk, instead communicating only with grunts and gestures. Mr. DeLuca will offer many other fascinating stories and details in his hour-long presentation.
The program is free and open to the public, though donations will be gratefully accepted. There is plenty of parking in the lot behind the Trinity Episcopal Church. For more information, call 203 – 881-2156 or contact .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).
