Seymour Historical Society Sponsors Depression Glass Fundraiser

In the early part of the 20th century, inexpensive, colorful glassware was often given away in cereal boxes or handed out to patrons of movie theaters. Over the years, what started out as everyday dishes have turned into valued collectable items.

On Sunday, Jan. 23, the Seymour Historical Society is hosting a fundraiser featuring a talk on Depression Glass by a noted expert, Anthony Bosse, a longtime collector and past president of the Nutmeg Depression Glass Club of Connecticut.

Bosse will give his presentation at Seymour’s Strand Theatre, at 56 Main Street, where he will also answer questions and identify glassware brought to the program by audience members. Admission to the fund-raising program is $5. Glassware identification is $3 per piece, or three pieces for $5.

In all, more than 20 manufacturers made more than 100 patterns of Depression Glass. Common colors are clear (crystal), pink, pale blue, green, and amber. Less common colors include yellow (canary), cobalt blue and ruby red. Due to its popularity as a collectible, Depression Glass is becoming more scarce on the open market, and some pieces may sell for several hundred dollars
