If you’d like an example of what is right with today’s youth, you need to look no further than the eighth graders at Seymour Middle School.
On a recent cold and blustery Saturday, eighty-eight student volunteers and eight of their teachers collected a record 313 frozen turkeys for families in need over the holidays.
The total shattered the previous high by almost 100 birds!
Donations were accepted at Seymour Middle School and at Chatfield-LoPresti Elementary School to make it more convenient for those that wanted to donate.
The effort is the brainchild of Basilla Stevens one of the eighth grade teachers at Seymour Middle School. Mrs. Stevens started the Turkey drive to help instill a sense of community in the students and to assist local families at the same time.
For the last thirteen years the students have made posters, waved to passing cars and cheered donors all in an effort to feed those in need in the community.
This year turkeys were donated to families within the Seymour School District as well as to The Seymour-Oxford Food Bank, The Spooner House and the Valley Food Bank.
