All the paperwork is signed and town officials are ready to build the new Chatfield-LoPresti Elementary School.
The Board of Selectmen voted unanimously Tuesday to sign a contract with Fusco Corp. of New Haven to be the construction manager for the building project, which will renovate and increase the size of the current Paul E. Chatfield Elementary School.
The project will transform the current school on Skokorat Street into an 86,000 square-foot facility that will host students from Chatfield and Anna L. LoPresti elementary schools. Town officials opted to expand the school instead on renovating both schools.
Donald Smith, chairman of the Chatfield-LoPresti Building Committee, said the contract signing was a formality because Fusco had already been working on the renovation project.
He said about 20 percent of the schematic design for the new school is complete.
The town will likely begin to go out for bid on divisions of the construction, such as site work, electrical work and plumbing, by next March, Abatement and site work may begin as early as July, he said.
Although town residents voted to spend $32.5 million on the project, Smith said it would cost less than that.
“We will be less than $32.5 million,” he said.
Most of the project will be covered through state funds and the town is in line to cover about $12.9 million.
