Seymour Police Officer Recovering After Crash

The Seymour police officer involved in a car accident in front of the Walgreens on Route 67 is at home recovering from his injuries, according to Lt. Paul Satkowski.

Officer Richard Sprandel was driving west on Route 67 on normal patrol at about 8:50 p.m when a car coming the opposite direction made an abrupt left-hand turn” in front of the police cruiser, Satkowski said.

The two cars collided.

Police have not ticketed or arrested the other driver — identified as Thomas Karlac, 59, of Seymour. The accident remains under investigation, Satkowski said.

Obviously we have more follow-up to do,” Satkowski said.

He said it’s not clear how fast either car was going yet, but that Sprandel was well within the speed limits since he was on routine patrol.”

Officer Sprandel was taken to Griffin Hospital. He was treated and released Tuesday evening. He suffered a back injury.

He’s out of work, and will be for an undetermined amount of time,” Satkowski said. He’s feeling a little better today.”

Karlac and an adult male passenger were taken to Waterbury Hospital.
