Seymour Police Union President Disciplined For Argument

A Seymour police officer who allegedly raised his voice to his sergeant will have to take anger management classes.

Officer Richard Sprandel also received a written warning in his personnel file, according to the 5 – 0 decision of the Board of Police Commissioners, made following an executive session April 7.

It was a disrespect for rank,” said Frank Conroy Jr., a member of the police commission, who said the dispute was over a malfunctioning back door in the police department.

Sprandel is the president of the Seymour police officers union.

In February, he and union vice-president John D’Antona wrote a letter to police Chief Michael Metzler complaining about a number of issues within the department.

One of the issues — a back door to the police department that didn’t open all the way.

Union heads could not comment, based on advice of their attorney.

Lt. Paul Satkowski, spokesman for the department, said an internal investigation showed Sprandel violated the department’s rules on respect and civility.

The commissioners said the argument happened sometime in the last couple of months.

It’s water under the bridge,” said Stephen Chucta, Jr., a member of the Police Commission.

Executive session meetings are closed to the public. They are allowed in certain categories, such as when officials are discussing specific employees, legal strategy or real estate deals. Votes of matters discussed in executive session must be made in public.
