Meet Marian Anderson, an eventual Danbury resident, a trailblazing contralto and civil rights activist who left an indelible mark on the world of classical music and the fight for racial equality. From her humble beginnings in Philadelphia to her historic performances at venues like the Lincoln Memorial, Anderson’s journey was defined by both her extraordinary vocal talent and her unwavering commitment to breaking down barriers.
Join John Cilio at the library as he explores the life and legacy of Marian Anderson, highlighting her rise to prominence in the classical music world, her pivotal role in the civil rights movement and the enduring impact she has had on future generations.
A Connecticut historian and storyteller, John Cilio is a member of the Organization of American Historians and a member of the Association for the Study of Connecticut History.
