Seymour Pushes First Day Of School To Sept. 8

SEYMOUR — The first day of school in Seymour has been pushed to Tuesday, Sept. 8, Superintendent Michael Wilson announced.

The first day of school had been scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 1.

This year’s school year is unlike any other, as districts attempt to teach kids during a global pandemic. Seymour schools need more time to get organized in the age of COVID-19, according to Wilson’s message, which was shared on Facebook.

With the fluctuation of students still opting both into and out of temporary distance learning (Central Office was still receiving requests as of 7:14pm on 8/26/2020) new positions and additional staff are required to educate these students properly,” Wilson said.

In addition, we are still awaiting necessary equipment (for both safety and technology) to provide all of our learners with the best educational opportunities we can, we have made the very difficult decision to push the start of school back from Tuesday September 1, 2020 to Tuesday September 8, 2020.”

Wilson’s message is pasted below:

Dear Seymour School Community,

We hope that this letter finds you safe and well. As you know, all of our Administrators and Staff have been working very hard to prepare to welcome our students back.

With the fluctuation of students still opting both into and out of temporary distance learning (Central Office was still receiving requests as of 7:14pm on 8/26/2020) new positions and additional staff are required to educate these students properly. In addition, we are still awaiting necessary equipment (for both safety and technology) to provide all of our learners with the best educational opportunities we can, we have made the very difficult decision to push the start of school back from Tuesday September 1, 2020 to Tuesday September 8, 2020.

Tonight, the Board of Education approved pushing our start of school back until September 8, 2020. This will allow us as a district the proper amount of time to receive all of our necessary equipment as well as properly staff our team.

This now moves our last day of school from June 9, 2021 to June 15, 2021.

The first four days of school will be in person only days:

  • Bus Group 1 will attend in person on September 8 and September 9.
  • Bus Group 2 will attend in person on September 10 and September 11.

There will be no remote learning on these days for our hybrid learners, as these days will be used to review protocols and procedures as well as to distribute the technology to students. However, for those who temporarily chose to opt into full distance learning, their classes will begin on September 8, 2020. Our full hybrid rotation plan will begin on Monday September 14, 2020 where students will access their class remotely on the days when they are not physically in school.

Tomorrow, August 27, those families that chose to temporarily opt into full distance learning will receive more detailed information from Central Office as it relates to their at home learning schedule. Thank you for your continued patience and understanding.

We apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause, however we feel that this provides the best educational opportunity for all of our students.

With Great Pride,
Michael Wilson
