First Selectman Paul Roy wants to see the town sparkle.
Later this month the town and the Seymour Land Trust will hold its first Seymour Earth Day to help make sure that happens.
The event will start at 7:30 a.m. April 25, in the Henry Hamel Building, 13 Chatfield St., with a breakfast for all volunteers.
After breakfast, the groups will break up and get to work and return around 12:30 p.m. for a pot luck picnic.
Nancy Onofrio, secretary to the town’s Economic Development Commission, said she has a number of volunteers who have signed up for the cleanup, but the more that sign up, the more areas can get cleaned up.
Onofrio said plans call for cleanup of the Community Center on Pine Street, the downtown and Legion Pool, which is maintained by the Seymour Land Trust. She said officials from Seymour High School have also asked to be included, but whether it gets cleaned up will depend on how many volunteers they get, she said.
“We’d like to make this as big as possible. It’s really going to be an exciting day and it’s a way for people to give back to their community,’’ said Onofrio.
“This will be an opportunity for the community to come out and beautify Seymour,’’ said Jim Rafferty, who is a member of the Board of Directors of the Seymour Land Trust. “I think people will have fun helping clean up,’’ he said.
Onofrio said they are also selling Seymour Earth Day T‑shirts that can be worn to school or work on April 22, which is the national Earth Day.
The shirts are $7 each and all the proceeds will go toward the purchase of flowers, plants and trees that will be planted around town on Earth Day. She said shirts are available from XS to XXXL (add $2 more for XXL and $3 for XXXL).
Checks are payable to the Seymour Land Trust.
