Seymour Public Schools launch the largest roll-out of a child identification program in Connecticut Monday, with the initial distribution of 3,000 child identification kits to the community.
The kits were made available free of charge through a national partnership between the American Federation of State, County & Municipal Employees (AFSCME) union and the National Child Identification Program (NCIP).
Seymour school officials handed out the kits to parents who attended the annual parent-teacher conferences on Nov. 14.
Additionally, all day care centers in Seymour have been contacted and will also receive these free child identification kits to distribute to parents.
According to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, more than 460,000 U.S. children went missing in 2015.
The child ID kits from the NCIP, first distributed in 1997, have helped law enforcement in their search for missing children.
There was a ceremonial presentation of the first kits to school representatives and the first parents prior to the start of parent-teacher conferences Nov. 14.
Presenters will included Rick Kearns, Security Director for the Seymour Public Schools, and Officer John Martin, President of the Seymour Police Union, AFSCME Local 564.
