Seymour School Budget Meeting Planned

The Board of Finance will review the $30.2 million school budget request at a meeting to be held at 7 p.m. on Feb. 28 at the Seymour Middle School.

Responding to a request from Superintendent of Schools MaryAnne Mascolo, the Board of Finance Thursday voted to change the location of the school budget informational session to Seymour Middle School, instead of Town Hall as originally planned.

We want to have a PowerPoint presentation, and we have the technology at the middle school to do that,” said Edward Strumello, chairman of the Board of Education.

The Board of Finance vote was 5 – 1‑1.

The informational session is for the Board of Education to explain its budget request to the Board of Finance.

The school budget is the largest piece of our budget and I want to give the Board of Education and the administrators our time that time, just for them,” Finance chairman Robert Koskelowski said, pointing out nothing else would be on the agenda.

Mascolo could not be reached for comment.

The Seymour school district is asking for a budget that funds all current programs — and adds some money for professional development, smart boards” and cleaning equipment. The $30.2 million request represents a 3.9 percent, or $1.12 million, increase over current spending.

With the same programs as the current year, the district expects to need about $900,000 more in 2011 – 2012. Mascolo’s added programs total another $200,000.
